Fiddlehead Look-alikes: Sensitive Fern
These look-alikes can make you seriously ill. Get the identification right before you eat anything. Only ostrich fern fiddleheads are widely eaten, identified by a deep U-shaped groove on the smooth stem and a papery brown scale. Sensitive fern and other ferns lack that groove and are not safe to eat. Harvest only fiddleheads you can identify with certainty.
